Before I started working as a travel consultant in 1998, I studied French history in school, after which I taught French. Not only do I speak that language fluently, but my native tongue is Russian. That’s the multicultural background I bring to my job each day, and it has helped me tremendously in putting together trips to Europe for my clients. I recently sharpened my knowledge of France, Belgium, the Czech Republic and The Netherlands during an exhilarating excursion to those fabulous destinations, and while there, I made sure to visit the hotels that our agency works with.
That said, my personal favorite getaways involve the beach. I marvel over Cancun, with its white sands and turquoise waters. I’m enchanted by Los Cabos, where they seem to have something for everybody – water sports, fishing, marine tours, culture, fantastic dining, nightlife and, of course, beaches. My love affair with the tropics explains why I get so much pleasure out of coordinating my clients’ travel to dreamy destinations such as Hawaii and Tahiti.
No matter what sort of adventures my clients are interested in, I listen closely as they talk about what they want to do, what kind of place they want to stay and how much they want to spend. Are they avid golfers? How much time do they have for their vacation? Does a cruise sound like fun? Do they envision staying at an all-inclusive resort? Are they bringing the kids? As I describe the options to them, I call on brochures, magazines and web sites for helpful visual aids, and if they’re interested, I share my own travel experiences. Happily, I find that former clients often come back and ask me to book second, third and fourth trips for them, so I feel confident that I’m taking the right approach to this wonderful and enlightening profession.
