After 20 years as a bookkeeper, I decided to switch gears and become a travel consultant, a goal I achieved in 1991. I have worked with Golden Odyssey Travel & Cruises since 1999, happily helping clients arrange vacations that are just right for them. I particularly enjoy coordinating trips to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii and Tahiti, and I’ve been known to send people to such exotic locations as Africa and the Dominican Republic. Honeymoons and destination weddings are particularly gratifying for me to plan, because couples are always excited about their romantic excursion to an exceptional getaway.
I feel fortunate to have visited some of the world’s most spectacular places. I love the South Pacific because of its beautiful water, diverse culture and gentle people. I spent three wonderful weeks in China, experiencing Beijing, Shanghai and fascinating smaller cities in between. During two weeks in East Africa, I marveled at the vivid sunsets, vast landscapes and symbiotic relationships of the animals in Kenya and Tanzania, and I’m ready to go back.
Many forces combine to make me a successful travel consultant. For instance, I believe that the more you read, the more you learn, so I constantly update my knowledge of the world by taking online courses and attending seminars. When I plan my own vacations, I know what sorts of things to look for, a skill that enables me to ask clients key questions about their wants and needs. I’m a talker as well as a listener, so I enjoy conversing with people, asking them what they like to do, where they’ve been before and how much they can afford to spend. It’s a fun process and a win-win situation. Clients walk away with a perfect vacation and I get the gratification of knowing I helped them plan it.
